Our reporter Bob Faw takes a look at Brubeck the man, some of his music, and the faith that makes it all happen.<\/p>\n<p><strong>BOB FAW<\/strong>: For nearly six decades, Dave Brubeck has been dazzling listeners worldwide. With his unique, inventive style, he has become a jazz immortal.\u00a0What is less known,\u00a0and just as remarkable,\u00a0is that for much of that time, Brubeck has also composed religious music like &#8220;The Commandments,&#8221; which he recorded for the Milken Archive of American Jewish Music.\u00a0In his religious scores, Brubeck achieves what he cannot achieve in jazz.<\/p>\n<p><strong>DAVE BRUBECK<\/strong>: When I write a piece, a sacred piece, I\u2019m looking hard and trying to discover what I\u2019m about, and what my parents were about and\u00a0the world is about.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wnet\/religionandethics\/files\/2009\/07\/post01a-dave-brubeck.jpg\" alt=\"post01a-dave-brubeck\" width=\"280\" height=\"210\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-21718\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>FAW<\/strong>: You think religious music can change people?<\/p>\n<p><strong>BRUBECK<\/strong>: Yeah, sure!<\/p>\n<p><strong>FAW<\/strong>: Brubeck says his service in World War\u00a0II convinced him\u00a0\u201csomething should be done musically to strengthen man\u2019s knowledge of God.\u201d In his choral work \u201cGates of Justice,\u201d also recorded for the Milken Archive of American Jewish Music, he pleads for brotherhood and invokes the words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.<\/p>\n<p><em>Soloists\u00a0singing from &#8220;Gates of Justice&#8221;: \u201dIf we don\u2019t live together as brothers, we will die.\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>FAW<\/strong>: In \u201cThe Commandments,\u201d Brubeck\u2019s message is strictly biblical.<br \/>\n<em><br \/>\nChorus singing from &#8220;The Commandments&#8221;: &#8220;Keep\u00a0my commandments.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>FAW<\/strong>: His masterwork, performed here by the Russian National Chorus, in Moscow:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wnet\/religionandethics\/files\/2009\/07\/post02a-dave-brubeck.jpg\" alt=\"post02a-dave-brubeck\" width=\"280\" height=\"210\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-21719\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Chorus singing:\u00a0&#8220;Alleluia, alleluia\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>FAW<\/strong>: Brubeck\u2019s classic is a Mass which Brubeck wrote at the request of a Catholic organization and entitled \u201cTo Hope: A Celebration.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>BRUBECK<\/strong>: The priest said, \u201cDave, I want people to be happy.\u00a0I\u2019m tired of people coming up for Communion with sad looks on their faces when it should be the happiest day of their week. So will you make it rhythmic and kind of feeling of something to make people move up the aisle, maybe swinging a little.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>FAW<\/strong>: Which explains why, in the midst of something reverential, Brubeck\u2019s quartet launches into toe-tapping, rollicking jazz.\u00a0For Dave Brubeck, jazz not only embraces, it also enhances religion.<\/p>\n<p><strong>FAW <\/strong>(to Dave Brubeck): How does the jazz magnify the religious message?<\/p>\n<p><strong>BRUBECK<\/strong>: Well, it would go back to the spirituals and the gospel singing that is so wonderful, so rhythmic and so great in certain churches, and\u00a0you reach that audience if you have that gospel feeling.<\/p>\n<p><strong>FAW<\/strong>: Sometimes, says Brubeck, the music shapes the text. Sometimes, he says, it\u2019s just the opposite.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wnet\/religionandethics\/files\/2009\/07\/post03a-dave-brubeck.jpg\" alt=\"post03a-dave-brubeck\" width=\"280\" height=\"210\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-21720\" \/><\/p>\n<p>(to Brubeck) I heard you at one point say \u201cmy basic approach is to sing the text until something seems right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>BRUBECK<\/strong>: Yeah, that\u2019s it:\u00a0\u201cAll my hope, all my hope is in you, oh Lord, you are my rock and my strength.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>FAW<\/strong>: As for those lyrics, it turns out that\u2019s the realm of Dave Brubeck\u2019s wife.<\/p>\n<p><strong>BRUBECK<\/strong>: My wife was driving, and I said, \u201cI\u2019ve finished this.\u201d And she said, \u201cNo, you haven\u2019t finished it.\u201d And I said, \u201cWell, what did I leave out?\u201d And she said, \u201cGod\u2019s love made visible. He is invincible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;God\u2019s love made visible.&#8221; So that\u2019s the way it finished.<\/p>\n<p><strong>FAW<\/strong>: Iola Brubeck, his wife of nearly 63 years (he calls her \u201cthe brains of the outfit\u201d), chooses the texts for most of his religious scores.<\/p>\n<p><strong>IOLA BRUBECK<\/strong>: After I catch on to what he\u2019s after, then I start reading and thinking about, well, what could apply? He thinks very musically. I tend to think more in forms of the narrative.<\/p>\n<p><strong>FAW<\/strong>: Have you ever had occasion to say, \u201cAh, dear, this isn\u2019t quite working. We ought to go another direction\u201d? Would you ever say that to the great Dave Brubeck?<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wnet\/religionandethics\/files\/2009\/07\/post04a-dave-brubeck.jpg\" alt=\"post04a-dave-brubeck\" width=\"280\" height=\"210\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-21721\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>IOLA BRUBECK<\/strong>:\u00a0I don\u2019t think I\u2019ve ever said we should go in another direction. I think I have been bold enough to say, you know, I just don\u2019t think this is quite saying what you want to say.<\/p>\n<p><strong>FAW<\/strong>: Sometimes, though, even a wifely intervention isn\u2019t enough. Listen to Brubeck\u2019s haunting \u201cOur Father\u201d in \u201cTo Hope\u201d:<\/p>\n<p><em>Soloist:\u00a0Deliver us from evil.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>FAW<\/strong>: All this, says Brubeck, was composed in a dream.<\/p>\n<p><em>Soloist:\u00a0&#8220;In your mercy , keep us free.\u201c<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>BRUBECK<\/strong>: But I did dream it that night, and it turned out pretty good.<\/p>\n<p><strong>FAW<\/strong>: Do you\u00a0dream in harmony? Do you dream an instrument, or do you dream a melody? What\u2019s the dream?<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wnet\/religionandethics\/files\/2009\/07\/post05a-dave-brubeck.jpg\" alt=\"post05a-dave-brubeck\" width=\"280\" height=\"210\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-21722\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>BRUBECK<\/strong>: Melody, orchestration. It\u2019s a pretty complete thing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>FAW<\/strong>: And is it true that after you had the dream and after you wrote it down you then decided to become a Catholic?<\/p>\n<p><strong>BRUBECK<\/strong>: Yeah, I figured somebody\u2019s trying to tell me something, and go with the flow.<\/p>\n<p><strong>FAW<\/strong>: Whatever the source, whatever the musical framework, this living legend always tries, he says, to convey the same message: love your enemies.<\/p>\n<p><strong>BRUBECK<\/strong>: You go by all kinds of churches, and they don\u2019t seem to know what Christ was trying to tell us.<\/p>\n<p><strong>FAW<\/strong>: You think it\u2019s a very simple message, what he was trying to tell us?<\/p>\n<p><strong>BRUBECK<\/strong>: No, it\u2019s profound. Probably the most profound thing in the Bible is\u00a0&#8220;love your enemies, do good to those who hate you.&#8221; This is what, to me, is the essence of Christianity.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wnet\/religionandethics\/files\/2009\/07\/post06a-dave-brubeck.jpg\" alt=\"post06a-dave-brubeck\" width=\"280\" height=\"210\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-21723\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>FAW<\/strong>: And the essence of the 88-year-old Brubeck, though slowed recently by illness, is that he is still improvising, still composing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>BRUBECK<\/strong>: I didn\u2019t play it that way when you asked me because my hands don\u2019t work.<\/p>\n<p><strong>FAW<\/strong>: Yeah, but your mind still does.<\/p>\n<p><strong>BRUBECK<\/strong>: Yeah.<\/p>\n<p><strong>FAW<\/strong>: Because what Dave Brubeck has learned is that while jazz can energize, even thrill, his religious music\u00a0can transform.<\/p>\n<p><strong>FAW<\/strong>: You have found music to be a vehicle to communicate God\u2019s command to love one another more deeply. That\u2019s really what it\u00a0comes down to, isn\u2019t it?<\/p>\n<p><strong>BRUBECK<\/strong>. Yeah.<\/p>\n<p><strong>FAW<\/strong>: You do that through your music.<\/p>\n<p><strong>BRUBECK<\/strong>: Right.<\/p>\n<p><strong>FAW<\/strong>: Through it all his wife says\u00a0Brubeck has\u00a0grown, musically and spiritually. In part, he says, because when the composition does succeed, there is nothing quite like it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>BRUBECK<\/strong>: You have a certain idea of what you wrote should sound like. And sometimes it doesn\u2019t sound that good, and sometimes if you&#8217;ve got a great orchestra and great conductor, it sounds better than you ever thought it could sound. And that\u2019s when you want to jump and holler and say, \u201cYeah, man!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>FAW<\/strong>: Dave Brubeck, taking jazz back to its roots,\u00a0to church.
