Read a new translation of Psalm 27 by Pamela Greenberg from her forthcoming book, \u201cThe Book of Prayer Songs: A New Translation of the Book of Psalms.\u201d It is the psalm most associated with the Jewish High Holidays.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Psalm 27<\/p>\n

By David.<\/p>\n

You are my light and my hope,
\nwhom should I fear?<\/p>\n

You are the strength of my life,
\nbefore whom should I tremble?<\/p>\n

When the wrongful approach to devour my flesh,
\nmy oppressors and enemies,
\nit is they who stumble and fall.<\/p>\n

If an encampment pitches tents against me,
\nmy heart will not quiver.<\/p>\n

If a war rises up against me,
\nin you I still trust:<\/p>\n

One thing I have asked from you,
\none thing I seek,<\/p>\n

to dwell in your house
\nall the days of my life,<\/p>\n

to behold your beauty,
\nto enter your innermost temple.<\/p>\n

You cover me with the tabernacle of your presence
\non days when hardship comes.<\/p>\n

You shield me in concealment of your tent.
\nUpon a rock, you lift me high from harm.<\/p>\n

And now, God, raise my head above troubles that surround me.<\/p>\n

In your tent, I will make my songs into offerings,
\nsinging forth all my melodies to your name.<\/p>\n

Listen, God, to my voice when I call out.
\nWith compassion, answer my need.<\/p>\n

It is to you my heart calls,
\n\u201cSeek out my face,\u201d
\nbecause your face, God, is what I constantly search for.<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t hide your eyes from me.
\nDon\u2019t push away your faithful in anger.<\/p>\n

You have always been my help.<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t tear me out by the roots;
\ndon\u2019t abandon me–<\/p>\n

for you are the one I count on for help.<\/p>\n

My father and mother may leave me,
\nbut you have gathered me in.<\/p>\n

Teach me, Source of Joy, your ways.
\nand lead me down the level plain
\nbecause of the dangers that surround me on every side.<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t give me over to breath of my fears.<\/p>\n

For distortions have risen up in name of truth,
\nthey breathe out visions of destruction.<\/p>\n

If only I could believe that I would see God\u2019s goodness
\nin the land of the living\u2026<\/p>\n

Keep up your hope in God.
\nStrengthen your heart and sturdy it;
