On Yom Kippur, the holiest of holidays in the Jewish liturgical year, psalms are recited throughout the day. Read new translations by Pamela Greenberg of three psalms associated with the Jewish High Holy Days from her forthcoming book, \u201cThe Book of Prayer Songs: A New Translation of the Book of Psalms\u201d:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Psalm 23<\/strong><\/p>\n

A psalm, by David.<\/em><\/p>\n

God is my shepherd; there is nothing I lack.
\nYou lay me down in lush meadows.
\nYou guide me toward tranquil waters,
\nreviving my soul.
\nYou lead me down paths of righteousness
\nfor that is your nature.
\nAnd when I walk though the valley, overshadowed by death,
\nI will fear no harm, for you are with me.
\nYour rod and staff\u2014they comfort me.
\nYou spread a table before me
\nin the face of my greatest fears.
\nYou drench my head with oil;
\nmy cup overflows past the brim.
\nSurely goodness and kindness
\nwill accompany me all the days of my life
\nand I will have dwelt in the house of the Holy
\nfor the length of my days.<\/p>\n

Psalm 32<\/strong><\/p>\n

By David, a psalm of understanding.<\/em><\/p>\n

Blessed is the one who lifts up her transgressions to God;
\nher sins will be forgiven.<\/p>\n

Blessed is the one for whom the Holy One
\nneed not reckon his faults;
\nwhose spirit is clean of deceit.<\/p>\n

When I ploughed the fields in silence,
\nmy bones wasted away;
\nthey groaned all day as I worked.<\/p>\n

For day and night your hand weighed heavy against me;
\nthe juice of my breast went dry, like the brittle fruit of summer\u2013Selah.<\/p>\n

I made my sin known to you.
\nMy wrongs I no longer attempted to hide.<\/p>\n

I said, I will confess my rebellions to the Eternal\u2013
\nand you forgave my sins and errors\u2013Selah.<\/p>\n

For this, let the one who loves you
\npray at any time she can find\u2013
\ndo not let the flood of waters overtake her.<\/p>\n

You are a hiding place for me,
\nprotecting me from anguish.
\nYou surround me with a loud cry of rescue\u2013Selah.<\/p>\n

I will enlighten and illumine for you
\nthe path you should walk.
\nMy eyes will give witness.<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t be like a horse,
\na mule without understanding
\nwith a bridle and halter put on to restrain it.<\/p>\n

In such a way God cannot approach you.<\/p>\n

Many are the pains of those who persist in their wrongs,
\nbut those who trust in their Creator are surrounded by love.<\/p>\n

Take joy in God and let the righteous rejoice.
\nCry out with gladness, all who are steadfast of heart.<\/p>\n

Psalm 90<\/strong><\/p>\n

A prayer of Moses, man of God.<\/em><\/p>\n

God, you have been a dwelling place for us
\nfrom one generation to the next.<\/p>\n

Before mountains were born,
\nbefore earth and its people came to exist.<\/p>\n

From eternity until eternity you are holy.<\/p>\n

Mortals can turn to you until they are crushed.
\nYou say, \u201cReturn, children of Adam.\u201d<\/p>\n

Because a thousand years you can hold in your sight
\nlike a yesterday passing into today,
\na watchman\u2019s hour of relief at night.<\/p>\n

You flood the years; they pass like sleep.
\nBy morning, they vanish like grass.<\/p>\n

At dawn a person flowers and is fragrant;
\nby evening we become withered and dry.<\/p>\n

For by your wrath we are extinguished.
\nBy your anger we are made to feel afraid.<\/p>\n

You have laid out our transgressions before you,
\nour secrets are illumined by the light of your face.<\/p>\n

All our hours pass by in your fury.
\nOur years come to an end as though imagined.<\/p>\n

The days of our years are seventy;
\nif we are strong, maybe eighty.<\/p>\n

All our boasts are toil and delusion,
\nbecause life passes and rushes and flies away.<\/p>\n

Who can bear the force of your rejection?
\nOur fear of you seems to us like your anger.<\/p>\n

Make known to us the portion of our days
\nso that we may gain a heart of wisdom.<\/p>\n

Turn back to us, God\u2014-Oh, how long?
\nHave compassion on those trying to serve your will.<\/p>\n

Fill our morning with acts of your kindness
\nand we will sing and rejoice all our days.<\/p>\n

Bring us joy in proportion to our days of affliction,
\nyears we saw only strife.<\/p>\n

May your acts be visible to your servants,
\nyour splendor to their children\u2019s eyes.<\/p>\n

May the sweetness of the Holy One, our Creator,
\nbe constantly before us.<\/p>\n

And the work of our hands, give us direction.
