1923-34<\/td>\nFrench forces make headway into Morocco and Mauritania; Western Sahrawi tribesmen resist, leading to a deal between France and Spain to stamp out Sahrawi resistance.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
1936<\/td>\nSpain takes full possession of the northern part of the territory.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
1950s<\/td>\nLarge deposits of high-grade phosphates are discovered in Bucraa.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
1956-1958<\/td>\nSahrawi resistance fighters continue to battle Spain.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
1958<\/td>\nAn agreement between Spain, France, and Morocco results in a weakening of the Sahrawi liberation army. Further agreements put the area of Saguia el Hamra and Rio de Oro under the authority of Spain.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
1961<\/td>\nWestern Sahara declared a “Spanish province.”<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
1963<\/td>\nThe U.N. places Western Sahara on the list of countries to be decolonized by resolution 1514.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
1966<\/td>\nU.N. ratifies the Sahrawi people’s right to self-rule.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
1968<\/td>\nThe Sahrawi resistance movement reforms as the Popular Front for the Liberation of Saguia el Hamra and Rio de Oro (POLISARIO Front).<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
1973<\/td>\nThe POLISARIO Front begins attacks against Spain.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
1975<\/td>\nSpain pulls out of Western Sahara, Moroccan and Mauritanian forces invade, POLISARIO Front forces defend their positions and stage attacks.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
1976<\/td>\nPOLISARIO Front declares the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR), which now serves as a government in exile. Thousands of refugees leave Western Sahara.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
1982<\/td>\nOrganization of African Unity (OAU) admits SADR as a full-fledged member.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
1987<\/td>\nConstruction — which began in 1980 — is completed on the Moroccan wall that protects occupation forces from POLISARIO attack.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
1988<\/td>\nMorocco and POLISARIO Front accept U.N. peace plan.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
1991<\/td>\nA U.N. brokered cease-fire is signed between Western Sahara and Morocco. Morocco sends settlers into the area.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
1992<\/td>\nThe U.N.-brokered referendum on statehood is delayed following disputes about who is eligible.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
1997<\/td>\nJames A. Baker III is appointed as U.N. Envoy to Western Sahara.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
