{"id":1692,"date":"2008-07-14T12:59:54","date_gmt":"2008-07-14T16:59:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wnet\/wideangle\/?p=1692"},"modified":"2009-03-09T17:45:01","modified_gmt":"2009-03-09T21:45:01","slug":"international-court-accuses-the-sudanese-president-of-genocide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wnet\/wideangle\/uncategorized\/international-court-accuses-the-sudanese-president-of-genocide\/1692\/","title":{"rendered":"International Court Accuses Sudanese President of Genocide"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" style=\"margin: 5px;float: left\" src=\"wnet\/wideangle\/files\/2008\/06\/govt_bashir.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"218\" height=\"168\" \/>The International Criminal Court (ICC) in the Hague has  <a id=\"qpdz\" title=\"charged with genocide\" href=\"http:\/\/africa.reuters.com\/wire\/news\/usnL14554745.html\" target=\"_blank\">accused Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir of genocide<\/a> and crimes against humanity in Darfur.<\/p>\n<p>With prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo&#8217;s official request for an arrest warrant on Monday, al-Bashir became the <a id=\"d4rk\" title=\"first head of state to be charged with war crimes\" href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/world\/2008\/jul\/14\/sudan.warcrimes3\" target=\"_blank\">first head of state to be charged with war crimes<\/a> by the ICC.<\/p>\n<p>Al-Bashir &#8220;<a id=\"f2tt\" title=\"used the whole state apparatus\" href=\"http:\/\/www.icc-cpi.int\/press\/pressreleases\/406.html\" target=\"_blank\">used the whole state apparatus<\/a>, he used the army, he enrolled the janjaweed. They all reported to him,&#8221; Moreno-Ocampo said, presenting his evidence against al-Bashir to the court. &#8220;His alibi was a &#8216;counterinsurgency.&#8217; His intent was genocide,&#8221; the prosecutor said.<\/p>\n<p>But the Sudanese government has refused to recognize the authority of the court.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We don&#8217;t recognize whatever comes out from the ICC,&#8221; Sudanese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Al al-Sadig said. &#8220;<a id=\"lxb.\" title=\"To us it is non-existent\" href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/newsMaps\/idUSMCD44004220080714\" target=\"_blank\">To us it is non-existent<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>United Nations aid workers and peacekeepers are worried that the warrant for al-Bashir&#8217;s arrest might cause problems for them on the ground in Sudan. Some aid organizations have evacuated all but the most essential members of their staff. Last week, <a id=\"n.gx\" title=\"seven members of the U.N.\/African Union peacekeeping force were killed\" href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2008\/07\/09\/AR2008070900843.html\" target=\"_blank\">seven members of the U.N.\/African Union peacekeeping force were killed<\/a> in Darfur, and some speculated that the attack was carried out in anticipation of the ICC&#8217;s charge.<\/p>\n<p>But in a statement issued after the court&#8217;s announcement, U.N. <a id=\"snxy\" title=\"Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon\" href=\"http:\/\/africa.reuters.com\/top\/news\/usnBAN450200.html\" target=\"_blank\">Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon<\/a> said that U.N. peacekeeping, humanitarian and development work would continue.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The International Criminal Court (ICC) in the Hague has accused Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir of genocide and crimes against humanity in Darfur.
