In the late 1990s, worldwide use of opiates, including heroin, was estimated at 13 million people or 0.2 percent of the world population. Along the main heroin trafficking routes in Central Asia, levels of heroin abuse are on the increase, according to the UNDCP. Even further afield, Afghan-origin heroin has made its mark. In Europe, where heroin is the main problem drug, heroin addicts account for 70 percent of all drug addiction treatment demanded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
