The region is home to religious insurgent groups, migrant workers from neighboring countries, separatist groups vying for independence and indigenous tribes. <a id=\"grwc\" title=\"Last Thursday\u2019s bombings\" href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/2\/hi\/south_asia\/7699105.stm\" target=\"_blank\">Last Thursday\u2019s bombings<\/a> in the northeastern state of Assam were vivid reminders of the volatile disagreements between these various groups.\u00a0 The death toll following the 13 or more coordinated blasts reached <a id=\"j\" title=\"84 people\" href=\"http:\/\/timesofindia.indiatimes.com\/India\/Assam_blasts_toll_rises_to_84\/articleshow\/3668379.cms\" target=\"_blank\">84 people<\/a> today, with more than 400 people reportedly injured. An elusive terrorist group called the Islamic Security Force &#8211; Indian Mujahideen <a id=\"jhu6\" title=\"claimed responsibility for the attacks\" href=\"http:\/\/timesofindia.indiatimes.com\/India\/ISF-IM_says_it_carried_out_Assam_blasts_\/articleshow\/3659468.cms\" target=\"_blank\">claimed responsibility for the attacks<\/a> on Friday in an SMS message sent to <em>News Live<\/em> television which read: \u201cWe, ISF-IM, take the responsibility of yesterday blast. We warn all of Assam and India for situation like this in future. We thank all our holy members and partners. AAamin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The Indian Mujahideen has claimed responsibility for several attacks in <a id=\"a-8g\" title=\"other parts of India\" href=\"http:\/\/news.in.msn.com\/national\/article.aspx?cp-documentid=1590175\" target=\"_blank\">other parts of India<\/a> this year. The coordinated bombings in a popular tourist district in Jaipur on May 13, 2008 <a id=\"h1u5\" title=\"claimed more than 80 lives\" href=\"http:\/\/www.timesonline.co.uk\/tol\/news\/world\/asia\/article3925840.ece\" target=\"_blank\">claimed more than 80 lives<\/a>. In July, a coordinated series of 19 bombs were detonated in Gujarat\u2019s capital, Ahmedabad, killing at least <a id=\"b6i8\" title=\"45 people and injuring 160\" href=\"http:\/\/www.csmonitor.com\/2008\/0728\/p04s01-wosc.html\" target=\"_blank\">45 people and injuring 160<\/a>. Tensions between Hindus and Muslims in Gujarat have been high since 2002 when <a id=\"o_ni\" title=\"sectarian violence\" href=\"http:\/\/www.economist.com\/world\/asia\/displaystory.cfm?story_id=11849539\" target=\"_blank\">sectarian violence<\/a> flared up and 2,000 Muslims were killed by Hindu mobs. Gujarat is home to a strongly anti-Muslim wing of India&#8217;s main opposition party, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Although Islamic Security Force &#8211; Indian Mujahideen claimed responsibility for the Assam bombings, the police and special task forces continue to investigate, theorizing that <a id=\"w0vv\" title=\"several different terror groups\" href=\"http:\/\/english.aljazeera.net\/news\/asia\/2008\/10\/2008103163645621462.html\" target=\"_blank\">several different terror groups<\/a> worked together on the attacks. They have not yet ruled out a separatist group called the United Liberation Front of Assam, which carried out deadly bombings in Assam earlier this month. The publicity department for the the ULFA has <a id=\"nj4c\" title=\"denied the group's\" href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2008\/10\/30\/AR2008103000537.html\" target=\"_blank\">denied the group&#8217;s<\/a> involvement. Police are investigating two other active groups, Harkat-ul-Jihad-e-Islami (HuJI) and the Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI), which <a id=\"xwtu\" title=\"may have links\" href=\"http:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/s\/nm\/20081101\/ts_nm\/us_india_blast_assam\" target=\"_blank\">may have links<\/a> to both ULFA and ISF-IM.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">With <a id=\"l1h8\" title=\"174 terrorist, insurgent and extremist groups\" href=\"http:\/\/timesofindia.indiatimes.com\/India_has_174_terror_groups_Manipur_tops_with_40\/rssarticleshow\/3659956.cms\" target=\"_blank\">174 terrorist, insurgent and extremist groups<\/a> operating in India, some of which have been banned by India&#8217;s government, it\u2019s clear that the investigations into the latest attacks will take time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><em><strong>WIDE ANGLE explored the issue of sectarian violence in India in <\/strong><\/em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wnet\/wideangle\/episodes\/soul-of-india\/introduction\/904\/\">Soul of India<\/a>. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:\"> <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The northeastern region of India, comprised of seven states that border Bangladesh, China, Bhutan and Burma, has experienced more than a decade of violence and more than 10,000 people have died in the region as a result.
