Aso&#8217;s Liberal Democrats have been in power since 1965, but yesterday&#8217;s election result, in favor of the opposition Democratic Party of Japan in Tokyo, is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/07\/14\/world\/asia\/14japan.html?ref=world\">considered a bellwether<\/a> for the lower house elections of Japan&#8217;s parliament. The lower house legislators select the country&#8217;s prime minister.<\/p>\n<p>North Korea&#8217;s leader Kim Jong-Il <a href=\"http:\/\/www.koreatimes.co.kr\/www\/news\/nation\/2009\/07\/113_48355.html\">may have pancreatic cancer<\/a>, according to unidentified South Korean and Chinese intelligence sources. Kim Jong-Il is known to have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.koreatimes.co.kr\/www\/news\/nation\/2008\/09\/116_30869.html\">suffered a stroke in August 2008<\/a>. Other unsubstantiated reports claim that <a href=\"http:\/\/english.chosun.com\/site\/data\/html_dir\/2009\/06\/26\/2009062600296.html\">Kim Jong-Il designates his youngest son<\/a>, Kim Jong-un, for succession.<\/p>\n<p>The Somali government regains control after a day of <a href=\"http:\/\/allafrica.com\/stories\/200907130011.html\">violence with anti-government militants<\/a> in the capital, Mogadishu. <a href=\"http:\/\/english.aljazeera.net\/news\/africa\/2009\/07\/200971321358859789.html\">African Union peacekeepers are drawn into the conflict<\/a> while guarding the presidential palace after rebels approach the government building.<\/p>\n<p>Former President of Liberia Charles Taylor, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/07\/14\/world\/africa\/14hague.html?_r=1&amp;scp=3&amp;sq=Charles%20Taylor&amp;st=cse%20%3Chttp:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/07\/14\/world\/africa\/14hague.html?_r=1&amp;scp=3&amp;sq=Charles%20Taylor&amp;st=cse%3E\">first African leader on trial for war crimes<\/a>, takes the stand at a <a href=\"http:\/\/allafrica.com\/stories\/200907130529.html\">special tribunal for Sierra Leone<\/a> in the Hague. His indictment holds him accountable for commanding barbaric rebels during a decade-long period of violence that led to as many as 200,000 deaths in West Africa, including the diamond-mining areas in neighboring Sierra Leone.<\/p>\n<p>Germany formally charges accused World War II Nazi camp guard John Demjanjuk as an accessory to almost 28,000 murders. The Ukrainian, retired auto worker from Ohio is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thelocal.de\/national\/20090713-20561.html\">deemed fit to stand trial in Munich<\/a> after his deportation from the United States in May.<\/p>\n<p>Human rights investigators and journalists call attention to the conditions in a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.timesonline.co.uk\/tol\/news\/world\/asia\/article6676792.ece\">closed-off Tamil refugee camp<\/a> in Sri Lanka and ask for a peaceful end to the decades-long ethnic conflict.
