This hour-long film, hosted by Hedrick Smith, moves through Brubeck's life and career at a lively pace. Guided by Smith's questions and punctuated by comments and recollections by jazz impresario George Wein, critics Stanley Crouch and Ira Gitler, drummer Joe Morello and author and scholar Ted Gioia, Brubeck himself becomes the principal narrator and, of course, performer. Correspondent Hedrick Smith catches up with Brubeck and gently coaxes out his fascinating life story…The engaging documentary also follows the octogenarian's recent European tour; he lands in Berlin and finds no ride to the hotel and no reservation once he arrives. Spinal Tap never had it so bad. [Hedrick Smith's] subject proves engaging, reminiscing about his childhood, his partnership with saxophonist Paul Desmond, the heady days when Mr. Brubeck was on the cover of Time magazine and was performing behind the Iron Curtain at the behest of the State Department. |
