A sentimental, danceable song genre originating in Cuba in the early 20th century, now popular throughout the Spanish Caribbean. When bass is present, it features the following pattern of half note followed by two quarter notes:

As with the habanera before it, the bolero enchanted classical composers such as Gottschalk and Ravel, prompting them to create orchestral homages to the genre, bringing it much interest outside the ballroom.
