| Union Army leader and
Governer of New Jersey |
|
An otherwise brilliant soldier
whose differences with his commander-in-chief and others
finally ended his career as Union Army leader, George
McClellan often had to be ordered several times to take
military actions. Perhaps not surprisingly, he turned
to politics after his dismissal. McClellan ran as the
Democratic nominee against his former boss in the 1864
election, but lost to Lincoln once again. He later served
as governor of New Jersey. |
