The so-called "Golden Trumpet"
of abolitionism, Wendell Phillips broke with his aristocratic
New England family to fight slavery. Son of Boston's
first mayor, the Harvard law graduate was regarded as
one of the leading orators of his day. After emancipation,
Phillips continued to pursue an active human rights
agenda, supporting civil rights, women's and temperance
movements, and Native American rights, among other causes. |
