A conservative, wealthy New York
lawyer, George Templeton Strong's diary reveals his
innermost thoughts on social change and the wickedness
of slavery, and his growing disgust with Southern politicians.
But his thoughts were not his only contribution to the
war effort. His money helped equip a Union regiment
during the war, and his wife served on a hospital ship;
he later served as treasurer of the U.S. Sanitary Commission. |
