Painting outdoors for the first time was very difficult. The studios in Paris are sky-lit with northern light. So you get this lovely, silvery-gray light that's very steady throughout the day. When you suddenly go outdoors in the south in the Mediterranean the light's very strong, it's changing quickly, and Eakins had a terrible time.
