As Americans decide whether to re-elect their president or choose a new leader, FRONTLINE/World launches a new online project designed to give voters an international perspective on the 2004 presidential race. Featuring new web-exclusive reports each Tuesday through the November 2 election, "Dispatches from a Small Planet: Election 2004" will build on FRONTLINE/World's signature style of intimate and personal storytelling to help voters see how others in the world view the U.S. election.

"When we vote, the world watches. People around the globe know that whoever wins in November will likely have a major impact on their lives," says FRONTLINE/World series editor Stephen Talbot. "We aim to remind visitors to our web site what the rest of the world thinks of our election, and to let people here know what's going on politically in other parts of the world not often covered by the mainstream media."

In keeping with FRONTLINE/World's mission to encourage new voices in international reporting, "Dispatches from a Small Planet: Election 2004" will feature stories by young "backpack journalists" in addition to award-winning veterans such as Lowell Bergman and Orville Schell.

On Tuesday, August 3, FRONTLINE/World series editor Stephen Talbot reports from Lebanon, where Syrian troops still occupying the country exert a strong influence on local elections, in which the radical Hezbollah ("Party of God") emerged recently as a major winner. Talbot also reports on his visit to Damascus and meeting with Syrian President Bashar al Assad.

On Tuesday, August 10, Carrie Ching reports on American veterans of the Vietnam War now living in Thailand -- the vets who didn't come home -- and how these expatriates view the war in Iraq and the U.S. election.

Launched in May 2002 to accompany the broadcast debut of FRONTLINE/World, the FRONTLINE/World Web site has garnered critical acclaim for its original reporting, including the prestigious General Excellence Award at the 2002 Online Journalism Awards.

Funding for the FRONTLINE/World "Dispatches from a Small Planet: Election 2004" is provided by PBS viewers and the Carnegie Corporation of New York.
