Seemingly Lighter than Air When the time came to construct the deck, Ammann did without the stiffening trusses that made other bridges unsightly. Instead he used plate girders built into the underside of the roadway, a kind of horizontal truss that added little to the deck's thickness. Thus, the deck that emerged over the Hudson River was only twelve-feet deep. From any distance it appeared to float.
