EVERY CHILD IS BORN A POET: The Life and Work of Piri Thomas

Sermon From the Ghetto

Brothers and sisters of all colors, No longer can men, women and children bend their backs and make a cop-out to the freedom of dignity, Cause we’re on our way.

Heed well world, my America. Live by the precepts that this country was supposedly founded on.

Do not build your gardens on the suffering of your fellow human beings. Do not buy toys for your children bought at the price of other children, you have sacrificed.

Sit not in churches and bend your knees in prayer. Mouth not the words of Christ, of peace on earth, and good will to all, if you know in your hearts that you are truly lying.

For while you are smiling and living well, black children, brown children, red children, yellow children, white children, multi-colored children, children, children, children, because of your hypocrisy, are dying, physically, mentally, spiritually, morally, and worst of all, America, secretly in broad daylight.

What is the fermenting passion that spreads out, And becomes as close as the hairs on your body? What is the seeming sense that keeps beating a sad-assed message of futility?

And you're able to walk and smile, And help and love and share warmth and beauty, And even wipe away the tears that are not from the eyes, but from the soul.
