Women Make Waves: Introduction: I think it's important for a girl growing up to have sport. Surfing is wonderful because of the self-esteem you get. You can get last in your heat, but you feel like a winner all the time.

Since its beginnings in ancient Hawaii, surf, sand and board have called to men and women alike. From Hawaii to Australia to Malibu, the waterwomen of yesterday have made it possible for today’s hottest female surfing stars to succeed.

The increasing popularity and recognition of surfing among women is a testament to the talents and efforts of a handful of female surfers who carved the way for today’s athletes. Here we honor some of those surfer girls.
