A self-proclaimed “amateur photographer,” jazz bassist Milt Hinton captured intimate portraits of his mentors, colleagues and friends—photos of jazz greats such as Louis Armstrong, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Billie Holiday and Benny Goodman.

From the color barriers of the segregated South to the integrated studios of New York City, Hinton’s remarkably honest photographs document the evolution of jazz as inseparable from American history itself.
