| For centuries, immigrants have introduced words, phrases and concepts into the languages of the cultures they join—helping these languages to change and evolve. Common English words like bungalow, alligator, sugar and pundit all come from non-native English-speaking cultures. While many American words are derived from French, Greek or Latin, in this activity we are highlighting words that have been absorbed into English from the homelands of the new Americans featured in the series. |
