When the war finally ended in 1945, there was a great deal of pent-up consumer energy. This had been stoked by advertisers, who for years had promised products that would be available when peacetime finally came. The optimism and economic growth that came with our victory in World War II fueled the steep, heady climb to the consumer culture we live in today.
