Imperial Concerns

Map: Europe 1914

By proxy Britain committed her Empire to war. This meant she could draw on troops from such places as India, Australia and New Zealand to do her fighting, but it also meant that she must guarantee the security of her imperial subjects and territories.

Of utmost importance was the Suez Canal in Egypt, the jugular vein of the Empire. Vital to the movement of supplies and troops around the Empire, the British quickly realized that the canal and the Middle East would be of enormous strategic importance during the war.

They acted immediately, and formed the Egyptian Expeditionary Force to secure the canal.
