With the Arabs already in occupation the British forces entered Damascus peacefully.
Lawrence, Auda and Feisal were welcomed as heroes in the streets of Damascus but the mood soured when the British and Arab leaders finally met.
In an audience with Allenby, Prince Feisal was furious to learn that, despite the sacrifices of his Arab army, the French government would step in and run Syria.
Devastated he stormed out. Lawrence, mentally drained and physically exhausted, took his leave to return to Britain.
The war was over but the battle for the peace was just beginning.
