Goodrich is listed in the journals as having been born in Massachusetts, but no information has been found that records his date of birth or life prior to his enlistment in the Corps on January 4, 1804, at Camp Dubois, Illinois Territory. Apart from his reputation as one of the expedition’s best fishermen, his assignments during the course of the mission were generally routine. Clark recorded him as deceased in his “List of Men on Lewis and Clark’s Trip,” noted on the cover of his 1825-1828 account book.
