Can anyone start a Kids Cafe?

Louise Arnett

"This is something anyone can do. We have had several articles appear in the newspapers and people will come from neighborhoods all around to volunteer. We've asked the universities [to send volunteers] and [students from] the surrounding universities have come through. Some of the basketball, volleyball teams, some of their religious groups, all the little groups that they have get together. And then we, for awhile, had too many [volunteers], so we try to keep them coming on different Mondays. So then the kids all know what Monday they'll be coming. And that's great. It takes many people who get along with each other, who enjoy taking care of the children, who enjoy seeing the children. When they come in, nothing is the same. "

"This is not something that just anyone can do. You have to have a special love for children. I have had some volunteers that when the kids get rowdy, have had to get up and leave. They just could not handle it. You have to have a lot of patience and a special love for children to be able to do this."
