Afghanistan: Important Terms

  • Atatürk: First president of Turkey and founder of the Republic of Turkey.

  • Baker Hamilton report: The Iraq Study Group made a forward-looking, independent assessment of the current and prospective situation on the ground in Iraq and how it affects the surrounding region as well as U.S. interests. A final report was released to Congress, the White House, and the public on December 6, 2006.

  • Frantz Fannon: A black intellectual born in 1925, author of BLACK SKIN, WHITE MASKS (1952) and THE WRETCHED OF THE EARTH (1961).

  • Hekmatyar: "Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, originally from Baghlan, is the head and founder of Hezb-e-Islami."

  • Hezb-e-Islami: "The most radical and powerful of Afghanistan's Islamic movements is an officially recognized political party which now claims to be one of the largest blocs in parliament."

  • Lashkar: "...Lashkar-i-Taiba, one of the largest and best-trained groups fighting Indian forces in the disputed Himalayan province of Kashmir. Lashkar-i-Taiba has been linked by U.S. authorities to al Qaeda and in 2002 was banned by Pakistan's government as a terrorist organization."

  • Malalai Joya: Malalai Joya is an Afghan politician and former member of the Afghan Parliament. She's a strong advocate for women's rights.

  • MTC: "MTC Technologies, Inc. (MTC) is an industry-recognized provider of aircraft modernization and sustainment, professional services, C4ISR, and logistics solutions to the Department of Defense and national security agencies."

  • Pashtun: "The Pashtun constitute a majority of the population of Afghanistan and bore the exclusive name of Afghan before that name came to denote any native of the present land area of Afghanistan."

  • Senlis Council report- "The Senlis Council, a group based in Europe and Afghanistan, proposes legalizing and managing the poppy crops, turning them into medicines such as morphine. It wants to adapt a program that largely eliminated heroin production in Turkey in the 1970s with the support of President Nixon and Congress."

  • U Victoria Global Studies report: The University of Victoria in Canada produced a global studies report in 2004 available online here.

  • Wackenhut: "The Wackenhut Corporation is the leading provider of quality, customer focused security solutions in the United States. The company provides its industry-leading integrated security and related services to local, regional and national customers."
