As our recent story on the deployment of the New Jersey National Guard illustrated, when weekend warriors are deployed for long tours their families and employers are left with a multitude of problems — logistical and emotional. The Internet has made getting and giving aid to deployed troops a bit easier. Families can get the phone numbers and email addresses of family readiness and family assistance centers from the New York National Guard's Web site, which maintains a national database. In addition, local National Guard units maintain their own presences online with resources for soldiers and families. For example, the New York State Military Family Program offers child care help and marriage enrichment seminars.

The Web also allows families and local citizens to keep in touch with their state's overseas forces. Some local newspapers, like the BERGEN RECORD, have put together compendiums on their troops. The special "New Jersey at War" has articles, photos, video and audio — and updates on the whereabouts of the troops. Many state or local National Guard divisions Web sites are providing frequently updated information on those deployed throughout the nation and world. And then there are the blogs. Use the map below to find out more about the citizen soldiers in your locale.
