Two women relax at Bubble Pond on Maine's Mount Desert Island, early 1900s. Mount Desert, a fashionable summer resort for wealthy Easterners, became the site of Acadia National Park in 1919 thanks to the philanthropy of John D. Rockefeller Jr., George Dorr, and their friends, who bought up much of the island and then donated it to nation so everyone could enjoy it.
