In 1872, when Yellowstone became the world's first national park, Lewis Carroll's "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" was already a best-seller. Hoping to capitalize on it – and on the natural wonders of Yellowstone – the Northern Pacific Railroad distributed brochures linking the two. For the first decades of the park's existence, the railroad was essentially in control, until the Army was sent in.
