Through his magazines, Hutchings made sure the nation became aware of Yosemite Valley's beauty in the 1850s – and then opened a hotel to cater to those who showed up. After Congress set aside the valley in 1864, however, Hutchings refused to acknowledge the public's ownership, challenging it all the way to the Supreme Court. He lost the case and eventually was evicted from the valley he had made famous.
