Sheldon, an amateur naturalist, came to Alaska's Mount McKinley in the early 1900s. A member of the influential Boone and Crockett Club, Sheldon crusaded to have the area set aside as Mount McKinley National Park in 1917. (In 1980, the name was changed to Denali National Park.)
