Prior to the creation of the National Park Service in 1916, the Army was in charge of protecting Yellowstone and other early parks. Sometimes the soldiers ended up explaining a park's features as well as keeping visitors from getting hurt or despoiling the scenery. Here, a soldier and tourist peer into Giant Geyser.
