John E. Cook in Alaska, 1970s

A third-generation Park Service employee, John Cook was dispatched to Alaska in the late 1970s to set up management of the national monuments President Jimmy Carter had just created – and try to deal with the furious local opposition. Cook's daughter, Kayci, is now the only fourth-generation Park Service employee in history.
