John Muir considered Hetch Hetchy a "precious mountain temple" and fought in vain to stop San Francisco's plans to build a dam there on the Tuolumne River in Yosemite National Park. But the failure galvanized park supporters to push for creation of the National Park Service, an agency solely dedicated to protecting parks from similar incursions.
