Nothing changed the national park experience more than the advent of the automobile. John Muir understood the trade-off: cars would bring more people to the parks, and therefore help build support for them. But he also worried that the "blunt-nosed mechanical beetles" might detract from the tranquility unless restrictions on their use were imposed.
