Thinking about Think Tanks, Part One of Two (aired 10/13/2005)
Today on Think Tank we are
going to talk about Think Tanks. In Washington and elsewhere there are
a plethora of such institutions -sometimes shrouded in
mystery. Ideologically, they range from left, to right, to center; they
play an important role in defining issues and ideas for both
governments and for the public. How do these Think Tanks work; why are
they important?
American Greatness (aired 5/12/2005)
The 20th Century, has been called "The American Century." And at the beginning of the 21st, America is the world’s only superpower. Among the world’s nations, America ranks number one economically, militarily and culturally. But has America lost its sense of what once was called "American Greatness"? Does America need to rediscover its sense of purpose?
In the Wake of the Plague: the Black Death and the World it Made (aired 3/20/2003)
The plague that struck Europe in the middle of the 14th century, known as
the Black Death, wiped out nearly two-fifths of the continent’s population
in the span of only a few years. But according to a recent book by Norman
Cantor, "In the Wake of the Plague: The Black Death & the World it Made,"
the plague also forged a new world, one more individualistic and inclined to
doubt the old certainties. Think Tank talks to Prof. Cantor about the
Middle Ages and about how the plague changed the western world forever.
Whatever Happened to Socialism? (aired 6/13/2002)
The Twentieth Century has been called the Age of Ideology. One idea stands
out as perhaps the most influential of all: Socialism. Some believe it is
the most humane political idea ever invented, the key to peace and
prosperity. Others accuse it of creating poverty and giving rise to the
bloodiest regimes of the Twentieth Century. Did Socialism fulfill its
promise? Perhaps most important, does Socialism still exist?
Does History Have A Purpose? (aired 12/13/2001)
Think Tank with Ben Wattenberg talks with author Robert Wright about his recently published “Nonzero: The Logic of Human Destiny.” Many have argued that Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution suggests human history is aimless. However, in his new book, Wright examines the world, past, present, and future, through the lens of sociobiology and evolutionary psychology. He concludes that evolution does indeed reveal a direction to our history. Does that direction suggest there is purpose and meaning in the universe? Does it prove the existence of God?
