What’s Going on in Iran?

Here are some previous Think Tank programs that may be of interest.

Islam at the Crossroads  (aired 1/27/2005)
The allegiance of Muslim terrorists to a particularly virulent form of Islam has provoked fear and controversy all across the world. What are the tenets of this faith? Why has it seemingly spawned such fanaticism and hatred of Jews, Christians, Americans and the West? Is violence a perversion of Islam, as President Bush insists, or inherent in its teachings? Is Islam one faith or many?

The Saudi-American Alliance, Part Two  (aired 1/13/2005)
America’s 70 year long relationship with Saudi Arabia has been at times both fruitful and challenging. With the world’s largest proven oil reserves and major Saudi investment in the U.S. economy, the Desert Kingdom has been a strong economic and strategic partner. But inside Saudi Arabia, the Royal Family is under attack from Islamic terrorists who are opposed to the regime’s close ties with America. In fact, 15 out of the 19 Hijackers on September 11th were Saudi terrorists. In the wake of 9/11, the American government has been increasingly frustrated by some Saudis’ support for radical Islamic ideas. With so many major issues at stake for both countries, what is the future of the U.S. - Saudi alliance?

Is America Stuck in the Middle East?  (aired 1/7/2002)
Maintaining a secure supply of oil remains a problem for the United States, often a political one. U.S. energy security has long depended on the Middle East, which holds nearly two-thirds of the world’s known oil reserves. Critics say that makes it harder to fight the war on terror. It is said that America defers to Arab despots, led by Saudi Arabia, the "Big Daddy" of the global oil patch. Can that change? Is Middle East oil still crucial to American security? Or are new oil industry technology and the discovery of more and more non-OPEC oil fields driving down energy costs and leading to a more stable world oil market?

Is Peace Plausible?  (aired 5/1/1997)
Hope for peace in the Middle East has once again been shaken by violence. Can peace still prevail or was the process destined to collapse?
