The Atlantic Rift (aired 9/4/2003)
Americans don’t like the word "empire," but no empire in history has been equal to the United States in its ability to project its power and cultural influence around the world. The United States accounts for almost half of the world’s military spending. Its share of the world’s economic output is more than 30 percent -- three times larger than the British empire at its zenith. So, does America have an empire? If so, how is it different from the major empires of the past? What is its purpose? And how has this changed our relations with Europe?
Will Europe and America Get Along? (aired 1/16/2003)
Two stories dominated the second half of the 20th Century: the emergence of the United States as the world’s sole superpower and the movement away from war on the European continent toward something that might one day resemble a United States of Europe. Already there is a rivalry. Are these two global titans on a collision course?
