Will Immigrants Harm America?

Here are some previous Think Tank programs that may be of interest.

Becoming American  (aired 12/8/2005)
In this age of globalization and ethnic identity politics, what does it mean to be an American? Do we as a nation need to find new ways to talk about - and proudly encourage ≠ the exceptional American experience? In the aftermath of 9/11, the stakes could hardly be higher. One in nine Americans are foreign-born, and are here legally or illegally. Nearly one-fifth of U.S. residents speak a language other than English at home. Can we make it easier for immigrants to assimilate? Should we?

The Blending of America  (aired 1/15/2004)
Author and journalist Richard Rodriguez discusses race in America and his book, "Brown: The Last Discovery of America." Drawing on his own experiences as the son of Mexican immigrants, Richard Rodriguez challenges conventional notions of race and identity. Occasioned by the U.S. Census Bureau prediction that Hispanics were destined to replace African-Americans as the countryís largest minority, his latest book is a reflection on the cultural associations of the color brown.

Immigration: Curse or Blessing? (Part Two)  (aired 11/6/2003)
"Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free..." Those words, written by the poet Emma Lazarus, and inscribed at the base of the Statue of Liberty, declare that America is a nation of immigrants. But as long as we have had immigration, we have had heated debates about immigration policy. Today is no exeception. What rights should illegal immigrants have? How many immigrants should America accept? From where? How do we remain a beacon of freedom and protect our national security at the same time?

Is The West In Decline? (Part One)  (aired 3/27/2003)
Host Ben Wattenberg debates the future of American civilization, immigration, and Western culture with guest Patrick J. Buchanan. Buchananís new book, íThe Death of the West: How Dying Populations and Immigrant Invasions Imperil Our Country and Civilizationí has made the best seller lists of both The New York Times and The Washington Post in recent weeks. Buchanan argues that collapsing fertility rates in the West and increasing immigration from the Third World, played out against the backdrop of the "culture war," signal the decline and fall of Western civilization. Will Buchananís doomsday scenario be realized? Part 1 of 2.
