(aired 5/12/2001) This week, Think Tank visits Los Angeles, California, to check in on one of America’s largest and most tumultuous cities. Los Angeles today is a sprawling city of some 4 million people. About a third of those people live in the San Fernando Valley, just north of the Santa Monica Mountains. Many Valley residents believe they have been getting the short end of the stick for years and want to secede from the City of Los Angeles. The movement has resonance in other parts of America and in a world seeking to find a balance between localism and globalism. But it threatens to tear apart America’s second largest city. Will it succeed?
