Pope John Paul II has presided over the Roman Catholic Church for 25 years.
The next pope will be the 265th successor to St. Peter. He will face a
church that is described as split between the politically powerful and more
liberal clergy in Europe and the more traditional Catholics leading a
rapidly expanding Church in the Third World. It is said that factions
within the Church are already jockeying for position. Will the next Pope
hold to the current line? Or institute major changes? Should he? Will we
see another Italian at the head of the Catholic Church? Or is it time for a
Pope from the poor nations?
