Protecting trade secrets is a reality for most business.
Controlling the message about a product or a company is
also viewed as necessary, and savvy. But the chemical industry kept secret
vital information about potential health effects related to some of its
manufacturing processes and their products.
The public was not informed about harmful consumer products making use
of vinyl chloride as an aerosol, for example. And a concerted effort to
manipulate the news media was designed to convince the public there was
little or no downside to the chemical revolution.
