How Santa Fe became part of the United States

In 1846, General Stephen Kearny was sent to take Santa Fe from Mexico as part of the Manifest Destiny doctrine. The New Mexico Governor at the time fled to Mexico, after being bribed or realizing he could not win the battle. Kearny took control of the city on August 18, 1846 without bloodshed.

New Mexico became a territory in 1849, then finally a state in 1912.
