Jake Johannsen spent three years at Iowa State University in his home state, dabbling in veterinary science and chemical engineering. Then he moved to San Francisco to try his hand at comedy at a time when the city was fostering the likes of young talents such as Bobcat Goldthwait and Dana Carvey.

Johannsen made his comedy debut during an open-mike night at the Cobbs Comedy Club and four years later, in 1986, won the Eleventh Annual San Francisco Stand-up Comedian Competition. A favorite of David Letterman, the comic and raconteur has appeared on the late night host's show at least 30 times and also on Late Night with Conan O'Brien, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and Politically Incorrect.

Former host of Comedy Central's Two Drink Minimum, he appeared on HBO's Young Comedian's Special, a half-hour One Night Stand, and his own HBO Comedy Special, This'll Take About An Hour, for which he received a Cable Ace Award nomination for Best Writing in an Entertainment Special.

He filmed a pilot for NBC-TV entitled The Duplex and appeared in an episode of It's Like You Know on ABC-TV. On the big screen, Johannsen has appeared in two of Alan Rudolph's films: Mrs. Parker & the Vicious Circle with Mathew Broderick, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Campbell Scott; and Breakfast of Champions with Bruce Willis.

Johannsen is a regular at comedy clubs across the country and recently performed his acclaimed half-hour live show at the U.S. Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen, Colorado.
