The capital of California
under Spanish and Mexican rule, Monterey was the official site of
the American conquest of the region in 1846
and the site of a premature conquest when Commodore Thomas Ap Catesby
Jones raised the flag there in 1842, only to discover that the United
States and Mexico were not yet at war. Jones politely apologized and
left the next day.
