The farmers of the
Owens River Valley had approval for one of the first irrigation projects
planned under the1902 Newlands
Reclamation Act, but William Mulholland
and a group of Los Angeles civic leaders found a way to bring the
Owens River to Los Angeles
instead, constructing an aqueduct across more than 200 miles of mountain
and desert that remains an engineering marvel even today.
