Not even among the
ten highest Rocky Mountain summits (it ranks 32nd), Pikes Peak still
daunted its discoverer, Zebulon Pike, when he tried to scale it in
1806. The mountain's true
fame stems from the phrase "Pikes Peak or Bust," which was the slogan
in 1859 when as many as 100,000
miners rushed to this part of Colorado after gold was discovered at
nearby Boulder Canyon.
