Established in 1875,
at the height of the Black
Hills gold rush, Deadwood, South Dakota, is the site of the Western
Hemisphere's richest goldmine, the Homestake, and the burial place
of "Wild Bill" Hickock, who was shot in the back there while playing
poker in the Number Ten Saloon. The hand he was holding at the time,
aces and eights, is now called the "Dead Man's Hand."
