Abilene, end of the
trail for cowboys heading up the Chisholm Trail from Texas. An Illinois
cattle broker named Joseph G. McCoy put Abilene on the map when he
built extensive holding pens at this railhead in 1867.
Within a few years, however, increasing settlement pushed most cowboys
farther west, onto the Western Trail that led to Dodge
City.
