Winter Quarters, outside
present-day Omaha, was the temporary settlement Brigham
Young established on the Mormon's 1846
flight to Utah. More than 3,000 of his followers remained there while
he led an advance party westward in 1847,
and the settlement was not finally abandoned until mid-1848.
